Hello, citizens of Kostantiniyye. Today is Wednesday, 1 May, 1850 / Çarsamba 18 Jumādā ath-Thāniya, 1266.* Your weather forecast for today is a typical May day: relatively high humidity, but no soaring temperatures. Low cloud cover and light rain in the morning clears away for a fresher, mild afternoon and a pleasant evening. High of 22C/71F, low of 15C/59F.

This day will last in game until the end of 4 May (whatever time zone you're in; we're flexible like that). You can write any post set on the 1st of May
or tag into any post set on the 1st of May from now until the end of Friday 4th May.

In a while I will write a post set in the evening, which will be the party at the ambassador's mansion. Everyone is welcome to tag in. If you would like to try your hand at writing a post before you tag into the party, please feel free to do so, though it's certainly not required! The best model for understanding how threadbombs work is [livejournal.com profile] estdeus_innobis. There are lots of examples here. Don't worry about doing things "wrong" - the best way to learn how to RP is just to have a go. If you get stuck or confused of course either message me/[livejournal.com profile] torrainor write a note here on the OOC.

I will be making the default setting for this community friends only, so please ensure that you have joined the community and aren't just watching it.

Yay!! Launch day! So exciiiiiting!

* A note that is relevant in general: transliterated words out of Arabic and Ottoman Turkish can be spelled lots of different ways (as you've probably already noticed with the name "Kostantiniyye", also "Konstantiniyee", "Konstantiniyye", "Qostantiniyye") but this isn't something you should worry about too much as long as people can figure out what you're talking about!

You guys, I'm so excited! We're almost ready for launch!! We shall begin on 1 May, so I've decided it may as well be 1st May in game. That means it'll be Wednesday 1 May 1850/18 Jumaada al-Thaany 1266, woot! You will get a nice weather report on the day. I have decided that to kickoff the game it'd be fun to start with a threadbomb, which will be a party at the Ottoman Ambassador's residence. I still need to think up a spurious reason for this. Dignitaries, politicians, prominent business types etc will be invited. The Ambassador will also need to take on a few extra staff for the party so that could be a way to get your character in if you're not sure they'd be invited. And there's always the option of crashing, though you risk getting thrown out... ;)

For a couple of weeks after that I'll mostly let people get on with making their own character posts and just getting to know each other, and then I'll come in with a bit of gentle plot direction and so on. But I think it's best for everyone to mostly focus on interacting, seeing where chemistry sparks etc for the time being!

*twirls excitedly*

Oh btw, make sure you have joined this community! After we launch, I think I will default to posts here being friends only, except for general information posts etc. This is just so you guys feel like you can chill out and get to know each other without random people staring at your conversations.

Your leaders:

Currently [livejournal.com profile] torrain and I are the mods for the game. If the game grows, the mod team may too. Approach us with any questions!

Terminology:

Confusingly, we have two uses for 'tag' - game tags that livejournal uses (e.g. this post will be tagged with the "!mod" tag), and a term used to refer to comments in the game (so you could write "I tagged in the restaurant post", for instance). Thread - the series of comments. OOC: Out of Character. Threadbomb: a post where four or more characters interact over 50+ comments. PC: Played character. NPC: Non-played character.

Game play rules:
  1. Try to post/tag in once a week. Obviously, sometimes life happens and you have other obligations - no problem. If you will be away, please notify the OOC comm, that's all!
  2. Tag your posts. All characters will have a character name tag, so make sure you use that! You must also use warning tags if appropriate.
  3. Adult content must be tagged and behind a cut. Kostantiniyye is happy to feature explicit adult content, but not everyone wants to read it. Our warning tags: !ac: sex, !ac: violence, !ac: caution. Sex and violence are fairly self-explanatory. The caution tag is considered appropriate for content that may be triggering. Please remember that even if you don't find something triggering, someone else might. If you think your content might be upsetting, then add the tag and in your cut tag put a brief, NON-DESCRIPTIVE reason for the !ac: caution tag. (e.g. "Warning: non-con sex.) If the !ac doesn't happen until the comments, edit a note in closed brackets into the bottom of your post.
  4. Don't take part in more than one thread at a time. There are a couple of exceptions to this. If a thread you are in has gone dormant (no comments posted for over 48 hours), you can move on - though you should be cautious about doing this for continuity reasons. You can also join a planned threadbomb even if you are already in another thread, as planned threadbombs are normally organised community events such as party scenes - like this one.
  5. When you reach 48 tags, use your 49th tag to provide a link to a new post: here's an example from Excolo. This is because at after 50 tags, LJ's comments collapse and it's harder to read threads. The exception to this is obviously threadbombs. :)
  6. Wait your turn! If you're in a thread with multiple people who are all interacting, let everyone have their turn to take part. However, this doesn't mean you have to slavishly follow an A-B-C-D-A-B-C-D tagging order. Sometimes it might make more sense for person C to interject when B's due to speak. Just be fair and sensible about it!
  7. Posts should feature a time and location. Cos, you know, it helps people interact with you if they know where (and when) you are. ;)
  8. Also note if your post is open or not. This means: who do you want to interact with you? If you've arranged to play with a specific character, you could write: [Open to: Ashraf] at the end. If you don't mind who jumps in, just put [open]. If you are writing a reflective post that you don't want to use for interaction, write [closed].
  9. A game day lasts for four real life days. A moderator will roll over the day with an announcement in the OOC comm, also featuring a handy weather report. :)
  10. Don't tag into a post after a day has ended unless you have mod permission! You can also not backdate a post you put up without permission - this prevents retconning. :)
  11. Posts must be in first person. I know some people are fans of third person, but first person tends to result in more engaging RP.
  12. Don't move other PCs without their permission! Or put words in their mouths, or generally write for someone without their say so.
  13. Be awesome. That's the overall rule of the game. Be considerate to your fellow players, play nice with others, and in case of arguments, talk to a moderator rather than getting Godzilla-like with other players. Let's keep this comm a drama-free zone!
FAQs:
What would it be useful for me to include here? :) Ask away.

Since I figure it'll help galvanise us, I want to launch the game on 1 May. Before then I'll make sure there's a rules/FAQ post. We'll take applications for the game before we officially open, but it makes sense to try to create your character before then so you can get in right at the start! I may start with a couple of events to help as many characters as possible mix together before letting you go off on your own for a bit to start exploring connections. As you know, this game will have a little more modly nudging than Excolo, but for the first couple of weeks at least I'll mostly just let everyone find their feet with their characters.

So! If you've already designed a character that's been approved, make sure you make them a journal and use that journal to join this comm and game comm! If you haven't designed a character yet, come on in: the water's warm!

And I declare this post a party post! Come in here and get to know your fellow players!

We welcome applications from people with tons of roleplaying experience and people with none. The cardinal virtues of roleplayers are, I think: flexibility, creativity, respect. These count for more than experience. The game is not  quite ready for launch, but I thought I'd get the application post up now, as starting to form concrete ideas for characters actually helps game development.

Please fill in this form and leave it as a comment to this entry. I encourage other potential players to engage with you and ask you about your character ideas and see if they can think of ways to form relationships between your potential characters and theirs. This is conversation, not a test! :) I am very likely to approve applications that show a character with potential and you seem like someone who's enthusiastic about the roleplaying process. Do make sure you've read the background posts on the Kostantiniyye world before writing an application! Our worldbuilding is still in progress, but it should give you a decent idea of what kind of universe your character will be inhabiting. I might also have to ask you to tweak your application a bit to make it a better fit for the game, but I won't be telling you how to play your characters. As anyone who plays on [livejournal.com profile] estdeus_innobis (my other game) knows, initial character profiles often don't end up closely resembling the character who inhabits the game. Roleplaying is transformative. That's part of the fun. But a solid application gives us all confidence, right? :) If by the time you get to this post, there are a few character applications, have a read of those first to check your character's bringing something new to the table - there are only so many alchemists/sexy dancing girls/scheming bishops that any one game needs.

With that said, here's the simple form. Feel free to be as detailed as you like, particularly in the "further details" section.

This is worth a read because marriage structures in particular are different from what's typical in our own societies!
lots of info )
Gendered Power: This is an interesting area for the game, I think. I don't think it's plausible in this set up to entirely eradicate a patriarchal past. BUT in a world where one of the major religions (and its two major institutions) institutionalises bisexuality, I think this adds a complicating element. I think that in this world, social status is much more significant than gender status, but that there is probably a historic bias toward preferring men. Social status is determined by wealth, class, family reputation, and nationality (and of course different groups have different perceptions of what desirable nationalities are...). So this is definitely not an egalitarian society, but inequalities are not focused around gender.

Clerics of the Western Church are male and not allowed to marry - eunuchs are permitted to be clerics but castration is not necessary; in the Eastern Church they are eunuchs; in Islam imams may be male or female (not eunuchs); and hopefully Becky can give me some further thoughts on female rabbis... Outside this, I think that women can take on any role a man can. Eunuchs have a more complex social status, both privileged and constrained.

This is the out of character community for [livejournal.com profile] kostantiniyye. Yes, our name here is sort of a pun: constant action all the time - hopefully!

The game has officially launched! But we're still willing to take applications here.

For background reading, start here, then progress to more specific posts. General info posts have been left unlocked; now the game has launched, day-to-day business posts are locked to members of the community.
