Hello, citizens of Kostantiniyye. Today is Wednesday, 1 May, 1850 / Çarsamba 18 Jumādā ath-Thāniya, 1266.* Your weather forecast for today is a typical May day: relatively high humidity, but no soaring temperatures. Low cloud cover and light rain in the morning clears away for a fresher, mild afternoon and a pleasant evening. High of 22C/71F, low of 15C/59F.

This day will last in game until the end of 4 May (whatever time zone you're in; we're flexible like that). You can write any post set on the 1st of May
 or tag into any post set on the 1st of May from now until the end of Friday 4th May.

In a while I will write a post set in the evening, which will be the party at the ambassador's mansion. Everyone is welcome to tag in. If you would like to try your hand at writing a post before you tag into the party, please feel free to do so, though it's certainly not required! The best model for understanding how threadbombs work is [livejournal.com profile] estdeus_innobis. There are lots of examples here. Don't worry about doing things "wrong" - the best way to learn how to RP is just to have a go. If you get stuck or confused of course either message me/[livejournal.com profile] torrainor write a note here on the OOC.

I will be making the default setting for this community friends only, so please ensure that you have joined the community and aren't just watching it.

Yay!! Launch day! So exciiiiiting!

___________
* A note that is relevant in general: transliterated words out of Arabic and Ottoman Turkish can be spelled lots of different ways (as you've probably already noticed with the name "Kostantiniyye", also "Konstantiniyee", "Konstantiniyye", "Qostantiniyye") but this isn't something you should worry about too much as long as people can figure out what you're talking about!
[identity profile] rachel2205.livejournal.com
You guys, I'm so excited! We're almost ready for launch!! We shall begin on 1 May, so I've decided it may as well be 1st May in game. That means it'll be Wednesday 1 May 1850/18 Jumaada al-Thaany 1266, woot! You will get a nice weather report on the day. I have decided that to kickoff the game it'd be fun to start with a threadbomb, which will be a party at the Ottoman Ambassador's residence. I still need to think up a spurious reason for this. Dignitaries, politicians, prominent business types etc will be invited. The Ambassador will also need to take on a few extra staff for the party so that could be a way to get your character in if you're not sure they'd be invited. And there's always the option of crashing, though you risk getting thrown out... ;)

For a couple of weeks after that I'll mostly let people get on with making their own character posts and just getting to know each other, and then I'll come in with a bit of gentle plot direction and so on. But I think it's best for everyone to mostly focus on interacting, seeing where chemistry sparks etc for the time being!

*twirls excitedly*

Oh btw, make sure you have joined this community! After we launch, I think I will default to posts here being friends only, except for general information posts etc. This is just so you guys feel like you can chill out and get to know each other without random people staring at your conversations.

So something I've been wondering about is what the heck people wear in Kostantiniyye. I've been doing a bit of thinking about this, but would appreciate your feedback too, especially since I know how some of you are historical costume geeks :)

Given just how AU our world is in some respects, it's difficult to chart a course of fashion history. Now, I've chosen 1850 as a reasonably arbitrary start date for our game, which in the West in our world is full of clothes like this. But in a world that's already well into its industrial revolution, plus a world with less power disparity between the genders, the typical Victorian costumes make less sense. Meanwhile, Ottoman fashion of the same period was a mishmash of the huge range of cultures that society both influenced and was influenced by. (These are obvious basic wikipedia links but they are a reasonable place to start if you've not read much on fashion history.)  Meanwhile, in Kostantiniyye itself, fashions are bound to be an amalgam of the different cultures. I don't want to be too proscriptive in saying what people wear, but if we try to come up with a general vibe of clothing that would be seen as relatively acceptable that would probably be good!

For women, my starting point from a western perspective is a combination of the Victorian dress reform movement and the Turquerie trends of the C16th-18th. The crinoline doesn't seem to me as likely a trend in this world, but bloomers seem rational - modest, allowing movement, and cooler in the Turkish heat than heavy skirts. They bear some similarities to female costume in the Ottoman period too.

bloomin' marvellous )
For both Jewish and Muslim communities, religious regulations regarding clothing ensure modesty for both men and women (though note that these laws allow for a great deal of flexibility and variety in culture and fashion terms), and given the power of the Ottoman Empire, I imagine this has influenced European trends too. But I think we'd be more likely to see looser, flowing lines in fashion rather than the tighter fits of the late Victorian/early Edwardian period. Perhaps this is a point where New England is diverging a bit (especially since the British are self-consciously trying to raise their global profile) and perhaps are a bit more scandalous with, for instance, showing of decotellage or men wearing breeches - though I imagine that anyone who planned to settle in Kostantiniyye rather than just passing through would modify their clothes somewhat. So a British man might not go wholesale Turkish and start wearing kaftan and looselegged şalvar, but he might change his breeches for trousers...

Also worth noting that this industrialised age allows for mass-produced clothes, widening the possibilities of what people buy, although the well-to-do are likely to still prefer to go to their tailor.

Here are some pics of male and female fashion that I think could be useful pointers. If you have other ideas, please leave them in comments for discussion! I would say that in this city, you could probably get away with quite a lot of different looks as long as you're not, say, going about in a mini-skirt or have a bare head. (SO many awesome hat possibilities!)

Your leaders:

Currently [livejournal.com profile] torrain and I are the mods for the game. If the game grows, the mod team may too. Approach us with any questions!

Terminology:

Confusingly, we have two uses for 'tag' - game tags that livejournal uses (e.g. this post will be tagged with the "!mod" tag), and a term used to refer to comments in the game (so you could write "I tagged in the restaurant post", for instance). Thread - the series of comments. OOC: Out of Character. Threadbomb: a post where four or more characters interact over 50+ comments. PC: Played character. NPC: Non-played character.

Game play rules:
  1. Try to post/tag in once a week. Obviously, sometimes life happens and you have other obligations - no problem. If you will be away, please notify the OOC comm, that's all!
  2. Tag your posts. All characters will have a character name tag, so make sure you use that! You must also use warning tags if appropriate.
  3. Adult content must be tagged and behind a cut. Kostantiniyye is happy to feature explicit adult content, but not everyone wants to read it. Our warning tags: !ac: sex, !ac: violence, !ac: caution. Sex and violence are fairly self-explanatory. The caution tag is considered appropriate for content that may be triggering. Please remember that even if you don't find something triggering, someone else might. If you think your content might be upsetting, then add the tag and in your cut tag put a brief, NON-DESCRIPTIVE reason for the !ac: caution tag. (e.g. "Warning: non-con sex.) If the !ac doesn't happen until the comments, edit a note in closed brackets into the bottom of your post.
  4. Don't take part in more than one thread at a time. There are a couple of exceptions to this. If a thread you are in has gone dormant (no comments posted for over 48 hours), you can move on - though you should be cautious about doing this for continuity reasons. You can also join a planned threadbomb even if you are already in another thread, as planned threadbombs are normally organised community events such as party scenes - like this one.
  5. When you reach 48 tags, use your 49th tag to provide a link to a new post: here's an example from Excolo. This is because at after 50 tags, LJ's comments collapse and it's harder to read threads. The exception to this is obviously threadbombs. :)
  6. Wait your turn! If you're in a thread with multiple people who are all interacting, let everyone have their turn to take part. However, this doesn't mean you have to slavishly follow an A-B-C-D-A-B-C-D tagging order. Sometimes it might make more sense for person C to interject when B's due to speak. Just be fair and sensible about it!
  7. Posts should feature a time and location. Cos, you know, it helps people interact with you if they know where (and when) you are. ;)
  8. Also note if your post is open or not. This means: who do you want to interact with you? If you've arranged to play with a specific character, you could write: [Open to: Ashraf] at the end. If you don't mind who jumps in, just put [open]. If you are writing a reflective post that you don't want to use for interaction, write [closed].
  9. A game day lasts for four real life days. A moderator will roll over the day with an announcement in the OOC comm, also featuring a handy weather report. :)
  10. Don't tag into a post after a day has ended unless you have mod permission! You can also not backdate a post you put up without permission - this prevents retconning. :)
  11. Posts must be in first person. I know some people are fans of third person, but first person tends to result in more engaging RP.
  12. Don't move other PCs without their permission! Or put words in their mouths, or generally write for someone without their say so.
  13. Be awesome. That's the overall rule of the game. Be considerate to your fellow players, play nice with others, and in case of arguments, talk to a moderator rather than getting Godzilla-like with other players. Let's keep this comm a drama-free zone!
FAQs:
What would it be useful for me to include here? :) Ask away.
[identity profile] rachel2205.livejournal.com
Since I figure it'll help galvanise us, I want to launch the game on 1 May. Before then I'll make sure there's a rules/FAQ post. We'll take applications for the game before we officially open, but it makes sense to try to create your character before then so you can get in right at the start! I may start with a couple of events to help as many characters as possible mix together before letting you go off on your own for a bit to start exploring connections. As you know, this game will have a little more modly nudging than Excolo, but for the first couple of weeks at least I'll mostly just let everyone find their feet with their characters.

So! If you've already designed a character that's been approved, make sure you make them a journal and use that journal to join this comm and game comm! If you haven't designed a character yet, come on in: the water's warm!

And I declare this post a party post! Come in here and get to know your fellow players!
[identity profile] rachel2205.livejournal.com
We welcome applications from people with tons of roleplaying experience and people with none. The cardinal virtues of roleplayers are, I think: flexibility, creativity, respect. These count for more than experience. The game is not  quite ready for launch, but I thought I'd get the application post up now, as starting to form concrete ideas for characters actually helps game development.

Please fill in this form and leave it as a comment to this entry. I encourage other potential players to engage with you and ask you about your character ideas and see if they can think of ways to form relationships between your potential characters and theirs. This is conversation, not a test! :) I am very likely to approve applications that show a character with potential and you seem like someone who's enthusiastic about the roleplaying process. Do make sure you've read the background posts on the Kostantiniyye world before writing an application! Our worldbuilding is still in progress, but it should give you a decent idea of what kind of universe your character will be inhabiting. I might also have to ask you to tweak your application a bit to make it a better fit for the game, but I won't be telling you how to play your characters. As anyone who plays on [livejournal.com profile] estdeus_innobis (my other game) knows, initial character profiles often don't end up closely resembling the character who inhabits the game. Roleplaying is transformative. That's part of the fun. But a solid application gives us all confidence, right? :) If by the time you get to this post, there are a few character applications, have a read of those first to check your character's bringing something new to the table - there are only so many alchemists/sexy dancing girls/scheming bishops that any one game needs.

With that said, here's the simple form. Feel free to be as detailed as you like, particularly in the "further details" section.

LOCATION

"Located on a horn-shaped peninsula astride the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara, ... Constantinople dominated the narrow waterway that divides Europe from Asia. The complexities of that geography provided both advantages and challenges to the site's defense. A steep and rugged shoreline and the Sea of Marmara's swift currents protected the southern coast. To the north the Golden Horn, an inlet that bordered the peninsula, was a natural anchorage and harbor. The ancient Lycus River ran diagonally northwest to southeast across the peninsula, forming a narrow valley that sectioned the city into two distinct areas-a chain of six hills running along the Golden Horn to the north, and a single, larger hill to the south." CLIMATE QUICKNOTES: I'm just gonna c&p from Wikipedia here, y'all:

"Summer weather in Istanbul is moderately warm, with the temperature in July and August averaging 24 °C (75 °F).Extreme heat, however, is uncommon, as temperatures rise above 32 °C (90 °F) on only five days per year on average. Rainfall is also uncommon during the summer, with only four or five rainy days per month. Winters are cold, wet and often snowy, with the temperature in January and February averaging 4 °C (39 °F). Snowfalls tend to be heavy, but snowcover and temperatures below freezing rarely last more than a few days. Spring and autumn are mild, but often wet and unpredictable; chilly winds from the northwest and warm gusts from the south—sometimes in the same day—have the tendency to cause fluctuations in temperature."

This is likely to be a work in progress, even more than some of the other posts - particularly the culture part!

fires of faith )

Kostantiniyye, because it's such a melting pot of cultures, can be more sympathetic to cultural and religious differences and is usually quite a tolerant place compared to much of the world. However, its melting pot status also means the pot can sometimes bubble over, and tension between different religious and racial groups can sometimes break out into violence, or be demonstrated in daily terms by discrimination. Some parts of the city have a much more cosmopolitan, tolerant atmosphere than other parts, like any big city.

The largest populations in Kostantiniyye are Eastern Christian (300,000) and Muslim (400,000), followed by Western Christian (250,000), and then there is a smaller Jewish population (50,000). There are of course people from other cultures but they are not officially recorded in census information.

TECHNOLOGY AND SCIENCE is probably the area I could most use help with, to be honest! So your thoughts are appreciated. My idea is that the Scientific Revolution is led by the Ottoman Empire rather than Europe (which would have plenty of historical precedent, really - see history of Islamic science). I also had the idea that the Industrial Revolution is started in Britain, as it was in our world (in broad terms - I know a lot of this is open to debate but let's not get sidetracked :D) but that the driving force behind it was imperial interests, particularly in getting naval advantages, which has led to the Age of Steam. This happens rather earlier than in our world - beginning from the late 1600s rather than from 1750ish onward, though the domination of the sea by steam-powered ships didn't happen until the first couple of decades of the 18th century. It's now 1850. The British are the most technologically advanced of the three empires (though the Byzantines and Ottomans tend to think of them as a rather young upstart power and are very scathing about British culture), but the Ottomans have the best medical science. I want to leave a lot of things open to discussion, but I'd say technology levels are similar to our own in the early twentieth century.

An interesting point of difference is the existence of MAGIC. This is a science called ALCHEMY or al-kimia (depending on where you are from) and it is as reputable as any other science - it's studied extensively at university and indeed is considered one of the most difficult disciplines to master, with many important subfields. Most practitioners are theoretical alchemists and do not claim to be able to perform magic per se, or work within the field of alchemy to advance understanding in fields of chemistry, medicine etc. But there are some who claim, through their engagement with the advanced spiritual beliefs of alchemy alongside rigorous academic study, to be able to perform magic. The clearest visible sign of these are the golem. They are extraordinarily difficult to make and their creation in Kostantiniyee is only allowed if one has a licence from the University. The advanced masters of alchemy are often elite men or eunuchs, because the mystical side of alchemy has often been the province of religious orders that founded universities, but there are female practitioners too.

All three powers are at best sceptical of and at worst hostile to anyone who claims magical ability outside of this elite. The selling of magical potions or magical services is forbidden and is punishable by heavy fine or a beating. This doesn't stop these services being offered, of course, but one normally goes outside the city walls to find them...

I'm leaving the mechanics of this pretty open to interpretation, but here's some background.

This is worth a read because marriage structures in particular are different from what's typical in our own societies!

Gendered Power: This is an interesting area for the game, I think. I don't think it's plausible in this set up to entirely eradicate a patriarchal past. BUT in a world where one of the major religions (and its two major institutions) institutionalises bisexuality, I think this adds a complicating element. I think that in this world, social status is much more significant than gender status, but that there is probably a historic bias toward preferring men. Social status is determined by wealth, class, family reputation, and nationality (and of course different groups have different perceptions of what desirable nationalities are...). So this is definitely not an egalitarian society, but inequalities are not focused around gender.

Clerics of the Western Church are male and not allowed to marry - eunuchs are permitted to be clerics but castration is not necessary; in the Eastern Church they are eunuchs; in Islam imams may be male or female (not eunuchs); and hopefully Becky can give me some further thoughts on female rabbis... Outside this, I think that women can take on any role a man can. Eunuchs have a more complex social status, both privileged and constrained.

CONSTANTINOPLE. ISTANBUL. KONSTANTINOUPOLIS. قسطنطینیه.
KOSTANTINIYYE
Glory of Byzantium;
Heart of the Ottoman Empire;
Sacked by the British;
Now the greatest free city in either East or West, governed by Council with representatives of the Great Powers: the British, Byzantine and Ottoman Empires.
A city of religious tolerance, where Jews, Muslims, Eastern and Western Christians have equal rights.
(A man with no god is a man with no soul, and a man with no soul is no man at all; and you may do what you will with him - Edicts of the City of Kostantiniyye)
A city of political stability, hardwon and proudly protected.
(Any man, woman or eunuch who plots against the City is guilty of treachery, and their life is forfeit.)
In a world where:
There was no Protestant Reformation, but there was an
Industrial Revolution - in the seventeenth century, giving rise to the
Age of Steam;
Monogamy is unusual, triadic marriage is common and pederasty and corerasty are enshrined in law;
Byzantium lost Constantinople to the Ottomans, but its Empire never fell;
The British Empire controls much of the continent called New England, and protects the throne of the
Pope in the West, who sits in New York, while the
Pope in the East now sits at Alexandria after the Byzantines lost Konstantinopoulis;
The British in their turn took Istanbul from the Ottomans, but lost Constantinople; and a
Great Peace was made that enshrined Kostantiniyye forever more as a free city.
